Bronze Dove Sculpture by Sotaro Saegusa (1911–2006)

An elegant bronze sculpture depicting a dove by renowned Japanese sculptor Sotaro Saegusa.

This beautiful work exemplifies Saegusa's distinctive sculptural style, reducing the form of the bird to graceful flowing curves while preserving its warmth, serenity, and symbolic presence. Rather than pursuing strict realism, Saegusa sought to capture the essence and spirit of his subjects through simplified, harmonious forms.

Cast in solid bronze, the sculpture has an impressive weight of approximately 2.5 kg, giving it a substantial and luxurious presence despite its compact size.

The sculpture remains in good vintage condition with minor scratches, surface wear, and signs of age consistent with normal use. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

A wonderful collector's piece by one of Japan's most respected modern sculptors.

Artist Profile

Sotaro Saegusa (1911–2006) was one of Japan's distinguished twentieth-century sculptors. Born on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1935, receiving the prestigious Ohashi Prize upon graduation.

Throughout his long career, Saegusa exhibited regularly at Japan's leading national exhibitions, including the Teiten, Bunten, Nitten, and Shin-Nitten. His sculptures are admired for their symbolic simplicity, elegant composition, and ability to express warmth, life, and emotion through refined forms.

Beyond his own artistic achievements, he was a dedicated educator, serving as Professor at Nagoya University of Arts. He also played a pivotal role in revitalizing the stone-carving tradition of Aji and Mure in Kagawa Prefecture through the "Group Coppa" movement, inspiring generations of sculptors.

Today, his sculptures are represented in public spaces and collections throughout Japan, while his bronze animal sculptures and decorative works remain highly appreciated by collectors worldwide.
