Material: Silver
Dimensions: approx. 105 mm outer diameter; 63 mm inner diameter
Period: first half of the 20th century
Provenance: Acquired from Ethiopian collector Tekalegn Besepa, Addis Ababa
Description
A fine Rashaida silver bracelet from the Red Sea region, probably Eritrea or the wider Eritrea–Sudan–Yemen cultural sphere.
The Rashaida are a Bedouin group historically present on both sides of the Red Sea, with related jewellery traditions circulating between Eritrea, Sudan, Yemen, Egypt and Ethiopia. Bracelets of this type belong to the world of women’s jewellery, personal adornment and portable wealth, and could also be associated with dowry contexts.
This example is especially appealing for its large circular form and strong sculptural presence. The bracelet is hollow and rounded, with a broad body decorated with rows of applied and repoussé elements. A diamond-shaped plate closes the upper section, flanked by rounded terminals and fine beaded borders.
The surface shows a deep old patina, with extensive wear, darkened areas, oxidation and softened details. These traces give the object a strong sense of age and handling. The decoration remains clearly visible, but is softened by long use.
A very attractive Rashaida bracelet, appreciated for its large format, rich decoration, old patina and strong Red Sea Bedouin character.
Condition
Good condition overall, with significant wear, oxidation, rubbing, small marks, dents and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
The decoration is partly softened by long handling.
Deep old usage patina.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The bracelet only.
The photographic support is not included.
