Antique Collectible – Office Inkwell “Souvenir de Blankenberghe”

Category: Decorative Art Object / Luxury Office Accessories (Antiques)

Period / Era: Belle Époque / Victorian Period (circa 1880–1910)

Provenance: Produced in the workshops of France (Oise / Méru region) for the exclusive seaside resort of Blankenberghe (North Sea, Belgium).

This rare piece is a decorative miniature in the form of a sailing ship, originally conceived as a luxurious holder for an inkwell or perfume bottle. The object is a genuine historical souvenir, acquired at the end of the 19th century by the European aristocracy who frequented the elite resort of Blankenberghe. On the desks of that era, the piece served as a symbol of the owner’s social status, education and refinement.

Mother-of-pearl (Cidef / Natural Nacre) Structure: Both the hull of the boat (main body) and the sails of the boat are hand-carved entirely from giant seashells, carefully polished to preserve their spectacular natural iridescent reflections.

Brass Elements (Twisted Wire): The entire superstructure (mast, fastening system and decorative details) is handmade from brass wire. The ship's ropes and cables are reproduced with great fidelity through the technique of braiding and twisting (twisted wire), providing rigidity and an aesthetic specific to the Art Nouveau trend.

Applied Decorative Elements: The piece includes cast brass miniatures, such as an anchor with a movable rope attached to the board and a rudder at the rear.

On the main mother-of-pearl canvas, a hand-painted illustration (or applied by fine lithographic transfer in shades of navy blue) is preserved in exceptional condition, representing an anchor entwined with a rope. The perfectly legible period calligraphic text states: "Souvenir de Blankenberghe".

Base and Counterweight: The massive shell base is filled with gypsum (period modeling plaster). This original structural technique had the obligatory role of lowering the center of gravity, ensuring perfect stability on the desk to prevent the ink from tipping over and at the same time providing the anchor point for the metal rods.

Fixing Support: A brass metal collar in the form of an openwork crown is mounted on the deck of the boat, intended to fix the container.

The object is in a remarkable state of structural preservation for its age: the mother-of-pearl shows no cracks or chips, the inscription is intact, and the brass has developed a noble, natural patina, with no traces of modern repairs.

Important note: The piece has only one acceptable lack of historical wear – it no longer has the original small glass bottle (box/bottle) that was inserted inside the brass crown to house the ink. The brass crown support is, however, perfectly intact and allows the piece to be reassembled with a bottle of compatible size.
