賣家描述
Primitive Kombai Stone Axe – West Papua, Indonesia
Offered here is an authentic and highly traditional stone axe from the Kombai people of West Papua, Indonesia. This rare example originates from the remote Kombai region, situated in the northern part of the greater Asmat area, one of the most isolated rainforest environments in the world.
The axe dates to approximately the 1950s and was field collected in the 1980s, before traditional material culture from this region became increasingly scarce. It is a fine example of the simple yet highly effective technology that sustained the Kombai for generations.
The stone blade is securely attached to a hand-carved wooden handle using traditional natural fiber bindings. Every element was produced from materials gathered in the surrounding rainforest, reflecting the Kombai people’s remarkable knowledge of their environment and their self-sufficient way of life.
Stone axes such as this were indispensable tools for clearing forest, building houses, making canoes, and carrying out everyday tasks. Beyond their practical function, they also held cultural significance and represented an important part of the owner’s possessions.
The piece displays an attractive aged patina and clear signs of traditional use, enhancing its authenticity and ethnographic value. Genuine field-collected Kombai artifacts of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
An excellent and evocative collector’s piece from one of the last regions where Stone Age technology remained in everyday use well into the twentieth century.
