About the print
One of the most conceptually ingenious designs in Yoshitoshi's celebrated One Hundred Aspects of the Moon — a series famous for finding a hundred different ways to evoke the moon, and here doing so without showing it at all. The blind warrior Taira no Tomoume fights on amid a hail of arrows and fallen weapons, perceiving his enemies through inner sight alone. The moon of the title exists only in the poem-slip he carries into battle as a talisman, its verse lamenting: "From darkness I have wandered lost onto a darker path — the moon of my heart is becoming clouded." The empty, undetailed background — so unusual in a battle print — mirrors the sightless warrior's world, leaving the viewer, like Tomoume, to imagine the moon through the verse. It is this kind of psychological invention that made the series Yoshitoshi's late masterpiece and one of the most admired print series of the Meiji era.
