賣家描述
Traditional Lani Penis Gourd (Phallocrypt) – Papua Highlands, Indonesia
A rare and authentic traditional phallocrypt (penis gourd) from the Lani people of the Papua Highlands, Indonesian New Guinea. This exceptional ethnographic object was field collected in the 1990s, directly after a traditional dance ceremony witnessed in situ by the collector.
The object is made from a naturally shaped gourd, traditionally worn by Lani men to cover and protect the male genitals. In Lani society, as in other highland cultures of Papua, the penis gourd (koteka) is much more than a practical item of clothing; it is an important symbol of male identity, cultural belonging, and traditional appearance.
This example has a strong traditional outlook, preserving the characteristic shape and simplicity of highland craftsmanship. The natural surface of the gourd has developed a beautiful patina, reflecting its age and use. Its form, proportions, and original character make it a fine representation of Lani material culture.
Collected in the field during the 1990s, following a dance performance personally witnessed in the highlands of Papua, this piece has a direct and authentic provenance. Objects such as these are increasingly difficult to find with a documented field history, making this an important example for collectors of Oceanic art and ethnographic material culture.
