Espejo funerario de una mujer romana, 100-300 d. C.
Periodo Histórico: Siglos I – III d. C.
MATERIAL: plomo.
OBJETO: Espejo de plomo de una sola pieza formado por un marco de fundición con asa de laterales ensanchados y una placa o disco central en la parte posterior que alojaría la placa de bronce pulida o elemento de reflexión de la imagen. El espejo y extensión del asa están ricamente decorados con ornamentos florales, puntos en relieve, hojas de hiedra y elementos serpentinos. En la parte frontal y central el disco hubiera sostenido el elemento reflectante que solía ser una placa circular en bronce pulido. Además de su función práctica en el cuidado personal, el espejo poseía un fuerte valor simbólico como emblema de la feminidad, la belleza y la identidad de la difunta, acompañándola en su tránsito al más allá según las creencias funerarias romanas.
DIMENSIONES: longitud 172 mm, diámetro exterior del marco circular 94 mm, diámetro interior 41 mm, longitud del asa 63 cm. Espesor medio: 9 mm. Peso: 562 gr.
ESTADO: buen estado, sin grietas, decoración intacta.

OBSERVACIONES: El uso del plomo puede resultar llamativo, empero este metal era abundante, fácil de trabajar, lo permitía fabricar moldes con gran detalle, además de proporcionar peso y estabilidad al conjunto. La superficie reflectante, sin embargo, era normalmente de bronce, ya que el plomo no posee cualidades reflectantes adecuadas.
Este tipo de espejos en miniatura se usaban en los ajuares funerarios con varios posibles significados: representar la identidad y condición femenina de la difunta, simbolizar la belleza, el cuidado personal y el estatus social, acompañar a la fallecida en el tránsito al más allá, siguiendo una tradición muy extendida en el mundo romano. En ocasiones, los espejos aparecen junto a otros objetos de tocador, como: ungüentarios de vidrio, peines de hueso o marfil, agujas para el cabello, joyas o cajas de cosméticos.
Existen numerosas publicaciones sobre los espejos griegos de plomo hallados hasta ahora en las provincias orientales del Imperio Romano de primeros siglos de la era romana, tanto en las provincias romanas occidentales como orientales, incluyendo los Balcanes.
