Item Description
Kamakura-Bori Carved Lacquer Chest of Drawers – Mitsukoshi Selection, Clematis Motif
This is a beautiful example of Kamakura-bori, the centuries-old Japanese carved lacquerware craft originating in the city of Kamakura. This small three-drawer chest — perfect as a jewelry box, trinket chest, or decorative accent piece — was produced as part of the "Mitsukoshi Selection", the curated craft line of the renowned Mitsukoshi department store.
The front of each drawer is deep-carved (nunome-bori) with a stylized clematis (tessen) blossom and trailing leaves, finished in the classic Kamakura-bori technique of black lacquer laid over vermillion red (shu-nuri), so that the red glows through the carved recesses and edges. The remaining surface is textured with an all-over hexagonal, honeycomb-like relief pattern, giving the piece a rich, tactile quality typical of high-grade Kamakura-bori work. The sides and back are finished in a plain dark brown lacquer/wood tone, while the top surface repeats the hexagonal carved motif. Each of the three drawers is fitted with a small round black lacquer pull knob.
With its warm Showa-retro character and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this chest brings a refined, collectible touch to any tansu, tea room, or vanity display.
