Description

This is a Seto ware (Aichi Prefecture) matcha tea bowl titled “Kirifu-yu Bird Design”, created by Yukihiko Oe.

The bowl showcases the warm, natural character of traditional Seto ware, beautifully combined with a soft Kirifu-yu (mist glaze) and an elegant carved bird motif.

Its greatest appeal lies in the harmonious combination of the tranquil glaze and the hand-carved decoration. A single bird is depicted in relief against gentle green glaze, with finely incised lines expressing delicate feathers and rippling water. The natural craquelure (kannyu) formed in the glaze adds depth and character, while the firing process has created subtle variations that enhance the bowl’s unique appearance.

The gently undulating rim reflects the handcrafted nature of the piece, giving it the warmth and individuality characteristic of Seto ware. It is suitable both for use in the tea ceremony and as a decorative display piece.

The original wooden storage box is inscribed “Kirifu-yu Bird Design Tea Bowl”, and identifies the artist as Yukihiko Oe.

This lot also includes the artist’s biography. Yukihiko Oe received numerous awards and selections at major ceramic exhibitions, including the Seto Ceramic Exhibition, Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, and Modern Japanese Ceramic Exhibition. He was awarded the Aichi Governor’s Prize and the Asahi Shimbun Prize, among others. His works have been preserved by the City of Seto as well as overseas museums, reflecting his recognition as an accomplished Japanese ceramic artist.

⸻

Dimensions

* Diameter: approx. 11 cm
* Height: approx. 8.5 cm

⸻

Condition

The bowl is in good overall condition, with no noticeable chips, cracks, or repairs.

The craquelure (kannyu) visible on the glaze is a natural feature created during firing and should not be mistaken for cracks. Likewise, the slight asymmetry and subtle irregularities in the form are intentional characteristics of handmade pottery and are not defects.

Natural kiln effects, glaze variations, and craquelure are part of the artistic character of this work.

Please refer to the photographs for further details.
