Standing 29 cm tall, this is one of the larger and more assertive pieces in the series, with a presence that dominates any space it occupies.

The form is a tall, roughly cylindrical column, hand-built rather than wheel-thrown, with the raw energy of the making process left fully visible. The rim is dramatically irregular — one side extends outward in a bold, wing-like projection, torn and jagged at the edge as though broken from the earth itself. This intentional asymmetry is not imperfection; it is the defining statement of the piece. The opening is roughly rectangular, softened by the weight of the clay and the force of the fire.

The entire surface is covered in Sakata's signature horizontal incised wave patterns — dense, rhythmic arcs carved with great energy into the raw clay before firing. These lines flow across the body like geological strata, ocean currents, or the rings of a felled tree, evoking deep geological time. The lower third of the piece retains the warm, unsmoked terracotta tone of the natural clay body, while the upper two-thirds graduate dramatically into deep charcoal and matte black — the result of smoke and carbon absorbed during the unglazed yakishime firing. The transition between the two tones is one of the most visually compelling aspects of the work.

坂田甚内 Sakata Jinnai（1943- ）
Born in Tokyo in 1943, Jinnai Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda (1933–1983) — one of the most radical and influential ceramicists of post-war Japan — from 1964. In 1966, he established his own kiln and began working independently. In 1992, he founded the Ohmoriko Studio (桜杜工房) in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, where he continues to work today.
