Item Description
Sunrise (朝日 Asahi) — Fujii Shumei 藤井朱明(1936-2017)Sometsuke Porcelain Bottle Vase

Rendered entirely in fine underglaze cobalt blue (sometsuke), this tall bottle-form porcelain vase captures a forest at dawn with extraordinarily dense, hair-fine brushwork — countless individual tree silhouettes rise from a misted hillside toward a soft gradient sky that shifts from lavender-pink to pale blue. The elongated, gently tapering neck is left in pure unglazed-white porcelain, drawing the eye upward and offsetting the intricacy of the painted landscape below.

The piece is by Fujii Shumei, a porcelain artist from Arita, Saga Prefecture, known for weaving tree and foliage motifs into traditional sometsuke to express the seasonal landscapes of his hometown. The base bears his authentic kiln mark, "Shumei" (朱明), incised in the clay.

Measuring 32 cm in height, this is a substantial display piece with strong visual presence — it creates a quiet, contemplative focal point wherever it is placed.

Artist Profile

In 1962 his work "Kanryu" was accepted into the Nitten exhibition, the first of 15 Nitten selections. He established himself independently in nishikizuke (overglaze enamel) decoration in 1963, and opened his own kiln, Shumei-gama, in 1974. He received awards including at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Minister of Education Award at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition. He is recognized for a distinctive technique incorporating tree and leaf motifs into sometsuke underglaze painting to depict the seasonal scenery of Arita. He was a Nitten associate member (会友) and a member of the Saga Art Association.
