Item Description
Takaoka Copperware(高岡銅器) Archaic Bronze Style Vase with Taotie Motif
This cast bronze (鋳銅) vase from Takaoka, Japan, is modeled after ancient Chinese archaic bronzes. The body is fully covered with intricately engraved taotie masks (饕餮文), spiral scroll motifs (渦巻文), and a key-fret meander border (雷文帯) around the neck. Twin ram-head handles (双耳) flank the shoulder, and a beaded band (連珠文) runs beneath the neck. The surface has a deliberate verdigris-toned patina (緑青調仕上げ), giving the piece an aged, dignified appearance typical of this decorative technique.
Takaoka Copperware carries a tradition of roughly 400 years originating in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, and was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975.
The underside bears a commemorative inscription dated Showa 58 (昭和58年, 1983).
Size
Height: 19 cm
Diameter: 8 cm
Weight: 635 g
Condition
Good overall condition with minor surface scratches consistent with long-term storage. The verdigris-toned patina is an intentional decorative finish, not a sign of deterioration.
