Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
A finely carved ancient Egyptian Lapis Lazuli pendant, modelled in the shape of a blooming lotus flower. The amulet features a small carved loop to the top for suspension. Both the obverse and reverse display the same design. The amulet features a mottled blue and cream colouring, highlighting the natural mineral variations within the stone. It is presently fitted with a modern gold-coloured suspension ring.
-> In ancient Egypt, the flower conventionally called the lotus was actually a blue or white water lily. Because it closes at night and opens again with the morning sun, it became a powerful symbol of creation, regeneration and daily rebirth. It also represented Upper Egypt. Lotus-shaped pendants and jewellery elements were produced in precious materials such as gold, carnelian, turquoise and lapis lazuli, combining personal adornment with protective and symbolic meaning.
Length: ± 23,7 mm
Width: ± 16,4 mm
Condition: good solid condition, wearable. The amulet will be delivered with a modern suspension ring to allow for modern wear as a pendant, or to include on a necklace. Surface wear, small edge irregularities and natural imperfections in the stone. Irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Lapis Lazuli was associated with strength, courage, royalty, wisdom and truth. The dark blue colour reminded the Egyptian of the night skies and the gold pyrite flecks as the stars. It was favoured by the Egyptian pharaohs and was famously used in the burial mask of King Tutankhamun.
