要理解“半速母带（half-speed mastering）”这一术语，我们需要先了解母带唱片在母带制作过程中的切割方式的基本原理。简单来说，要创建母带唱片，抛光盘被放置在切割机上，这被称为母带车床（master lathe）。切割头将原始波形刻录到涂覆层上。完成后，清漆母盘将用于制造最终用于压制唱片的模具。

整个过程都需要高度技艺和极高的精确度。半速母带将整个过程降速到原速的一半。换言之，一张典型的33 1/3 RPM 唱片将以16 2/3 RPM的速度切割。源材料也会被降低速度（降低音高），这意味着最终的录音在回放时仍然听起来正常。

在极其复杂且漫长的制作过程中，仍有许多因素会影响音质的提升，但本质上以半速进行母带处理会带来更优秀的声音记录，低至中频部分更丰富、饱满，上频段更柔和。立体声像场得到极大增强，整体声音更聚焦且引人入胜。‘在半速切割时，源录音中大约在17 kHz的信息实际上被记录为8.5 kHz。因此，与以正常速度录制相比，这在半速下会在乙烯基上实现更准确、开阔的高频响应。’”
