About the print
One of the finest compositions Hiroshige ever devised. The viewer sits inside a teahouse near the Massaki Inari shrine, and the whole scene is cut by the great round window of the room — a flat sweep of grey-green wall giving way to the Sumida River beyond. A plum branch crosses the opening, still half in bud, with a camellia arrangement at the left edge and a line of geese trailing across the sky. Below, a ferryman poles his raft while a second boat works the near bank. The bokashi gradation across the water, deep blue in the foreground fading to pale at the far shore, is handled with real care in this impression.
