-> GLORIA ROMANORVM: 'the Glory of the Romans'

-> Arcadius was Roman Emperor in the East from AD 383 to 408 and the eldest son of Theodosius I. He was proclaimed co-Emperor while still a child and became sole ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire after his father’s death in AD 395, when the Roman Empire was permanently divided between Arcadius in the East and his younger brother Honorius in the West.

Arcadius was generally a weak and passive ruler whose government was dominated by powerful court officials, military commanders and his influential wife, Aelia Eudoxia. His reign was marked by political rivalry at Constantinople, conflict with the Gothic leader Gainas and religious tensions involving John Chrysostom, the outspoken patriarch of Constantinople. Despite these difficulties, the Eastern Empire remained comparatively stable and prosperous.

His coinage was struck in gold, silver and bronze at several eastern mints. Arcadius is usually shown wearing a pearl-diademed or helmeted imperial portrait, while reverse types emphasise military victory, Christian authority and the security of the Roman state. Common designs include Victory holding a cross, the Emperor standing with a standard, and the legend GLORIA ROMANORVM, meaning “Glory of the Romans”. He died in AD 408 and was succeeded by his young son Theodosius II.
