Middle Eastern Kashan ceramic bowl, underglaze-painted in black, and blue with a beautiful pearlescent patina/glaze. The bowl has a conical form with straight flaring walls and short foot, richly decorated in cobalt-blue, black and manganese on a cream slip ground, the interior with a central roundel to the wall containing geometric interlace.

-> Geometric interlace was an important decorative element in Islamic art. Its repeating and interconnected forms could suggest order, harmony, and continuity, while also creating a refined ornamental surface without relying on figural imagery. The central roundel in this bowl gives focus to the composition and reflects the balanced design principles of Islamic ceramic decoration.

Condition: Good condition, old restorations/fillings, beautiful silvery iridescence. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.

-> Underglaze-painted ceramics allowed the decoration to be applied beneath a transparent glaze, protecting the painted design while giving the surface depth and brilliance. The combination of cobalt blue, black, and manganese on a pale slip ground is characteristic of high-quality Middle Eastern ceramic production, where bold contrasts and carefully arranged geometric motifs created a strong visual effect.
