Antique Islamic - Ottoman silver ring with an impressive raised bezel set with a large oval cabochon of banded agate / carnelian. The stone displays a striking natural colour pattern, with a warm orange-red border surrounding broad white and golden-orange bands, and is held within a raised gilt setting.

The bezel is richly decorated with applied granulation, beaded borders and four gilt spherical ornaments placed near the corners. Narrow rectangular panels at either side contain finely worked geometric and foliate decoration. The broad shoulders are embellished with applied gilt arabesque motifs, creating a strong contrast with the darkened silver ground.

The underside of the bezel is enclosed and is engraved with a circular maker's mark or protective religious phrase in (pseudo)calligraphy. The substantial hoop tapers slightly towards the back.

Good solid and wearable condition. The silver displays attractive dark toning with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. The stone remains securely set.

-> Carnelian was highly valued throughout the Islamic world and was frequently mounted in rings, seals and amulets. Its durability and rich colour made it particularly suitable for jewellery, while historical sources also associated the stone with courage and protective qualities. Silver rings set with carnelian are known across a wide geographical area, including Iran and the Ottoman world, although decorative styles varied considerably between regional workshops.
