Large hand-carved wooden female bust – France/Belgium – circa 1880–1910
Description
A large and impressive hand-carved wooden female bust, executed from a single solid piece of wood. This finely carved sculpture most likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1880–1910) and is believed to originate from France or Belgium.
The sculpture depicts a classically inspired female figure with flowing hair and elegantly draped garments, displaying a high level of craftsmanship and strong decorative presence. The reverse is left roughly finished, indicating that the piece was originally intended for frontal display.
The bust retains an attractive aged patina acquired over time. It is offered in untouched condition with visible age-related wear and a prominent vertical shrinkage crack running through the sculpture, consistent with the natural ageing of solid wood. The piece remains stable and displays beautifully despite this condition.
Its exact original function is unknown. It may have served as an architectural decorative element or another monumental carved ornament.
