Grimm & Triepel Nordhausen Kautabakpot-pot with 2 decorative stoneware lids – Germany/Belgium – ca. 1900–1950

Description

A specially composed lot of three decorative lid pots made of glazed stoneware/earthenware, the largest Grimm & Triepel Kautabak pot from Nordhausen forming the main object.

1. Grimm & Triepel – Nordhausen – Kautabakpot

The largest pot is a imposing German tobacco pot with raised inscriptions:

“Grimm & Triepel” – “Kau-Tabak” – “Nordhausen”

In the center there is a medallion with the portrait of a smoking man wearing a hat. The pot is executed in gray stoneware with blue and green accentuated relief decoration. On both sides there are large, plastically shaped handles.

The richly profiled lid matches nicely to the pot in material, color scheme and decoration.

Grimm & Triepel was founded in the 19th century in Nordhausen and developed into an important German producer of chewing tobacco. Considering the inscription Nordhausen and the stylistic execution, this pot is probably dated to the first third of the 20th century, about 1900–1930.

2. Lid pot with Belgian coats of arms

Decorative pot with richly applied relief decoration in cream, blue and brown. All around are various Belgian provincial/regional coats of arms and place/province names, including Limburg, Namur, East Flanders and Brabant.

The pot has a richly ornamented frieze and a suitably profiled lid with knob.

Probably Belgian production from the first half/middle of the 20th century.

3. Relief pot with figurative scene

The third lid pot is also executed in richly decorated glazed earthenware/stoneware. Around the cylindrical wall there is a figurative relief scene with people, combined with geometric and floral ornamentation in cream, blue and brown.

The lid is equipped with a profiled knob and decoratively integrates well with the pot.

Of the three, this pot is visibly in the best condition; in the available photos no significant damage is observed.

Grimm & Triepel pot: at the rim of the lid there is a small chip / a small missing piece, clearly visible in the detail photo. In addition, at the underside of one of the side handles/knobs there is a small area of material loss. Other normal age- and use-related signs commensurate with age and material.

Pot with Belgian coats of arms: shows a visible hairline crack from the top edge. With the lid in place this is relatively unobtrusive in presentation. The line is clearly shown in the detail photos and is explicitly noted.

Third figurative pot: as far as visible no significant damage observed. Normal light signs of wear and age may be present.

All three lids are present. The photos are an integral part of the description and give an accurate impression of the decoration, signs of wear, listed damages and overall condition.
