【Product details】
A varied set of four Japanese ceramic lid rests, or futaoki, dating from the Heisei era. In the Japanese tea ceremony, a futaoki is used to support the lid of the iron kettle or the bamboo water ladle when they are not in use. The set brings together four contrasting forms and ceramic traditions.
The white porcelain futaoki was made by Kasuke Yokoishi (横石嘉助) of Hirado ware. Its cylindrical body is moulded with a repeating seigaiha wave pattern, a traditional motif associated with peace, resilience and the continuity of good fortune. It is accompanied by its original signed and sealed wooden box and a stamped cloth. Born in 1939 as the fourth son of the twelfth-generation Kasuke, Yokoishi studied ceramics at Arita Technical High School and later received the Governor’s Award at the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Exhibition.
The Kyō ware futaoki was made by Eiho Hashimoto (橋本永豊). Its softly crackled ivory glaze is decorated in a Kenzan-inspired style with a colourful arrangement of patterned ribbons. Born in 1969, Hashimoto graduated from the Faculty of Commerce at Doshisha University before studying specialist ceramic techniques, and succeeded to the second generation of the family name in 2003. The piece is accompanied by its original signed and sealed wooden box.
The green-glazed leaf-form futaoki is a Green Raku ware example bearing a potter’s mark, although the maker has not been identified. Raku ware is traditionally shaped by hand rather than on a potter’s wheel, giving each piece an individual sculptural character. The rich green glaze displays darker variations and fine crackling, while the upper surface is formed as a stylised leaf. It comes with an associated wooden box.
The final piece is a pale celadon futaoki formed from three upward-curving leaves, with exposed brown tips providing a subtle contrast to the soft green glaze. No box accompanies this piece.
All four are in very good used condition with minimal age-related wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
