賣家描述
Overview
For sale is a magnificent, authentic Makonde Ujamaa (Tree of Life) sculpture, hand-carved in East Africa (no reserve price). This investment-grade piece is an exceptional example of traditional Makonde craftsmanship, meticulously sculpted from a single, solid block of genuine African Blackwood (Mpingo).
Physical Specifications
• Height: 47 cm (Approx. 18.5 inches)
• Weight: 7.3 kg (16.1 lbs) — An incredibly dense, heavy piece that showcases the high mineral density of genuine, premium heartwood. It sinks completely in water.
• Material: 100% Genuine African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon)
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition with a rich, natural, deep-patina luster. No major cracks or structural damage.
Artistic Detail & Cultural Significance
This mid-range masterpiece features dozens of intricately woven, fluidly carved human figures, village tools, and ancestral symbols spiraling upward. Locally known as Dimoongo, the "Tree of Life" style represents the interconnectedness, unity, and multi-generational heritage of the Makonde people. The topmost portion features a prominent ancestral figure, anchoring the family lineage beneath.
The sculpture exhibits masterful use of negative space, with complex hollowed-out centers and interlocking forms that require months of patient hand-chiseling due to the iron-hard nature of Mpingo wood.
Provenance
This piece is a vetted vintage item, having been acquired over 20 years ago as a special gift. Unlike modern tourist pieces, it carries the weight, fine detailed precision, and historic patina of the golden era of mid-to-late 20th-century African tribal art.
