Chalkis was one of the principal cities of ancient Euboea, strategically situated on the Euripos Strait opposite mainland Greece. During the Archaic period, Chalkis became a major colonizing city, founding settlements in Sicily, southern Italy and the northern Aegean. It remained important through the Classical and Hellenistic periods before passing under Roman rule.
