Antique silver necklace incorporating an 1813 Portuguese 400 Réis coin.

A particularly appealing antique necklace combining a Portuguese silver 400 Réis coin dated 1813 with a substantial and beautifully constructed silver chain dating from the first half of the 20th century.

The coin, issued during the reign of D. João VI as Prince Regent, has been preserved as a wearable pendant. It retains attractive age-related toning and clearly defined details, including the Portuguese arms and the characteristic cross with four rosettes and the inscription IN HOC SIGNO VINCES.

The coin is an authentic 400 Réis (Cruzado Novo), 1813, Krause KM 331, weighing approximately 15 g, with a diameter of 36 mm and a silver fineness of .917, corresponding to approximately 13.76 g of fine silver.

The necklace itself is particularly attractive. The long 72 cm silver chain is formed from closely interlinked, sculptural S-shaped links, creating a rich woven appearance and a remarkably substantial feel. The construction, clasp and natural wear are consistent with first-half 20th-century jewellery.

The combination of an early-19th-century Portuguese coin with an older silver chain makes this a distinctive piece with considerable character, equally suitable as a wearable historical jewel or as an unusual addition to a collection of Portuguese numismatic and antique jewellery.
