Porridge spoon – Ethiopia – wood
Details
Origin: Ethiopia
Type: Porridge spoon
Material: Wood
Length: 25 cm
Period: mid-20th century
Provenance: Collected in situ by the present owner
Stand: None
Description
A fine Ethiopian wooden porridge spoon, collected in situ by the present owner.
Spoons of this type belong to the everyday domestic culture of Ethiopia, where carefully carved wooden and horn utensils were used for serving and eating porridge and other staple foods. Although utilitarian, these objects often show great elegance of line and a strong sense of form.
This example is particularly appealing for its long, balanced silhouette. The bowl is elongated and gently hollowed, while the handle develops into a clean, slightly tapering shaft. The open terminal gives the piece a refined graphic quality and makes it visually close to other elegant Ethiopian spoon forms.
A beautiful detail can be seen at the junction between the bowl and the handle, where the carver has created a subtle sculptural transition. This small feature gives the spoon more presence and distinguishes it from simpler domestic examples.
The surface shows a very attractive warm brown patina, with darker rubbed areas inside the bowl and a soft sheen from handling and use. The object has a genuine, intimate character, typical of utensils that were used, kept and handled over time.
A charming Ethiopian porridge spoon, appreciated for its elegant form, warm old patina and refined carved detail at the base of the handle.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, rubbing, scratches and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Old crack / split to the bowl, visible in the photographs.

Please refer to the photographs.

The spoon only.
No stand included.
