Description
A small and highly expressive funerary doll from northern Cameroon, attributed to the Namji type / Fali-Kirdi cultural area.
This example is especially appealing for its dense and layered construction. The inner structure is entirely built up through a tight wrapping of cotton thread, then partly covered with overlapping leather strips, creating a compact, almost mummified silhouette. The surface is dry, tactile and beautifully irregular, with the different layers of material remaining clearly visible.
The figure has a strong sculptural presence despite its modest size. The head is oval and slightly tilted forward, with small projecting elements, while the body rests on three short legs, giving the object a striking, almost animal-like stance. The stack of old metal rings around the neck adds a powerful visual accent and reinforces the sense of a carefully assembled ritual object.
These small funerary dolls are not refined decorative carvings. Their interest lies in their construction, their material density, and the way they preserve a direct relationship between form, wrapping, protection and ritual function.
A strong and unusual small example, appreciated for its layered leather surface, compact silhouette and intense vernacular presence.
Condition
Wear, rubbing, stains, small losses, surface irregularities and age-related fragility throughout.
The leather strips and cotton wrapping show dryness and wear consistent with age and use.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The doll only.
No stand included.
