Mytilene, the chief city of Lesbos in the northeastern Aegean, was a major Aeolian center in the Archaic and Classical periods. Sappho and Alcaeus lived there, and Pittacus of Mytilene was one of the Seven Sages of Greece. In 428 BC, Mytilene revolted from Athens; after its surrender in 427 BC, the Athenians abandoned a proposed mass execution but imposed tribute and disarmed the city.
