This is an original piece of Dutch modern studio pottery: a large incense burner that can also be used as a hurricane lamp. It is in very good condition.
Designer / Ceramist: The large incised initials HM stand for Hannie Mein (1933–2003), one of the most renowned Dutch potters of the mid-century period. Her work is instantly recognizable by its hand-formed, robust style and earthy glazes.
Assistant's signature: The letters EHB at the bottom right stand for Elly H. Blaauw, who worked as an assistant in Hannie Mein's studio. This indicates that the object was designed by Hannie Mein and thrown or decorated (in part) by Elly Blaauw.
Model number: The incised number at the top is the model or serial number (1019).
In 1988, Hannie Mein was one of the founders of the SKN (Foundation of Northern Netherlands Ceramists).
The appreciation for her work and artistry is evidenced by the "Hannie Mein Art Prize," established in 2006.
Circumference: 55 cm; height: 13 cm
Weight: 747 grams
