A finely potted Vietnamese blue and white covered box dating to the Later Lê dynasty, 15th–16th century. Of compact rounded form, the box is fitted with a slightly domed cover and raised on a short circular foot.

The cover is delicately painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a charming pavilion landscape, depicting a pavilion nestled among trees and rocks beside water, enclosed within double blue lines. The composition is spontaneous yet balanced, displaying the lively and expressive brushwork characteristic of early Vietnamese blue and white ceramics.

Particularly attractive is the beautifully preserved glaze, of a soft, luminous bluish-white tone with a gentle glossy surface and fine natural craquelure. The restrained use of cobalt against the warm, subtly aged glaze gives the piece an especially elegant and tranquil appearance. The landscape subject is also particularly appealing and considerably more evocative than the simpler geometric or floral decoration often encountered on small covered boxes of this period.

A refined and highly collectable example of early Vietnamese blue and white porcelain, notable for its excellent glaze, appealing landscape subject and pleasing compact form.
