This striking vintage Japanese ceramic sculpture is a piece of Shigaraki ware (Shigaraki-yaki), depicting a proud Akita dog standing beside a traditional treasure-inspired motif.

The dog is beautifully modeled with the characteristic features associated with the Akita: upright triangular ears, a powerful body, sturdy legs, and a tightly curled tail. Particular attention has been given to the expressive face, giving the dog a dignified yet charming character.

One of the most distinctive features of this sculpture is the treasure motif positioned beneath and beside the dog’s front paws. This unusual composition creates a strong sense of narrative, as though the Akita has discovered or is guarding a treasure.

The surface combines warm reddish-brown clay tones with rich olive-green and brown glazing.
