A striking vintage Japanese Tsugaru lacquerware vase from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan.

This tall cylindrical vase is finished in **Karanuri (唐塗)**, the best-known and most representative decorative technique of traditional Tsugaru lacquerware.

The surface displays complex layers of red, green, yellow-gold and dark lacquer, creating an intricate organic pattern across the entire body. Depending on the angle and lighting, the polished surface produces different reflections and depths of colour, giving the vase a particularly rich and dynamic appearance.

The original box is labelled in Japanese **「津軽塗」 (Tsugaru-nuri / Tsugaru Lacquerware).**

### Traditional Tsugaru Craftsmanship

Tsugaru lacquerware is one of the most important traditional crafts of Aomori Prefecture and has a history extending back more than 300 years to the Edo period.

It developed around Hirosaki in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture, an area of northern Japan famous for its long, severe and exceptionally snowy winters.

Karanuri is especially renowned for its labor-intensive production process. Traditional Karanuri requires approximately **48 individual processes**, repeatedly applying, drying, polishing and revealing different layers of lacquer.

Completing the process normally requires at least **one and a half to two months**.

Rather than simply painting a decorative design onto the surface, the distinctive Karanuri pattern is gradually created through repeated layers of coloured lacquer followed by careful polishing. The different layers are revealed during this process, producing the characteristic abstract pattern and remarkable visual depth associated with Karanuri.

For this reason, every finished surface develops its own individual appearance, making each piece visually unique.

The combination of numerous production stages, long drying periods and skilled hand-finishing makes traditional Tsugaru lacquerware a remarkable example of Japanese craftsmanship.
