Standing Buddha statue "Call of the Rain"
Lan Xang provincial
17th - 18th century
Laos
Copper alloy (Bronze)
16 cm x 7.5 cm x 5.5 cm

This characteristic Lao iconography posture represents a fundamental agrarian and spiritual ritual related to the monsoon cycle in Southeast Asia. In the 17th and 18th centuries, under the Lan Xang kingdom and then during the period of consolidation of regional principalities, local bronze founders developed a distinctive clean and frontal style. The lost-wax technique, artisanal and vigorous, gives these provincial bronzes an expressive and naive aesthetics of great modernity, where the smooth line of the body dialogues with the strict geometry of the pedestal.

This bronze sculpture cast in lost-wax depicting the Buddha standing in the Call of the Rain posture is known as Pha Ra Chroen Nam. The Buddha rests on a quadrangular step-ornamented pedestal. The face with an archaic, gentle smile features eyes incised half-closed, long tapering earlobes, and a conical ushnisha rising in a stylized flame. The work shows a deep, dark patina weathered by mineralization in places.

Condition: Good overall for its age. Losses of metal at the base. Beautiful dark patina, chocolate color.

Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
Sent with UPS and insured
