Vintage Moroccan / Moorish Brass Lantern Table Lamp – Multicoloured Glass – Onyx/Calcite Base – Mid-20th Century

Beautiful and highly decorative vintage table lamp in Moroccan / Moorish style, combining an elaborate pierced brass lantern with multicoloured glass panels and a substantial turned natural stone base.

The upper section is made of brass and features an attractive polygonal lantern construction. Each side is decorated with pierced geometric and floral motifs backed with coloured glass in several colours, including red, blue, green and amber/yellow.

The upper and lower sections of the lantern are extensively pierced with numerous small decorative openings. When illuminated, these create beautiful patterns of light and colour on the surrounding walls.

The lantern is further decorated with numerous small applied brass ornaments around its circumference and is finished with an elegant finial at the top.

The substantial base and turned column are made from a naturally veined stone, most likely banded calcite, commonly known commercially as onyx or onyx marble. The natural cream, beige, grey and honey-coloured veining makes every part of the stone unique.

The underside of the base remains unpolished and clearly shows the natural stone and traditional central mounting system.

The lamp is believed to date from around the middle of the 20th century. The brass lantern is of Moroccan / Moorish inspiration and may have been mounted on its stone base for the European market.

Condition

The lamp is in good vintage condition considering its age, with attractive natural patina, oxidation, small marks, irregularities and signs of use consistent with an older handcrafted decorative object.

Please note that the stone base has a visible hairline/fissure. This can be seen clearly in the photographs and is mentioned for complete transparency.

The brass has deliberately not been heavily polished in order to preserve its aged appearance and patina.

The electrical system is functioning and the lamp has been photographed illuminated. The electrical cable and two-pin European plug show age and are part of the lamp’s vintage character.

The photographs form an integral part of the description and show the condition, construction, stone veining and spectacular lighting effect in detail.
