【Artist Profile】
Taro Kamoda (b. 1963) is a potter based in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, and the son of Shoji Kamoda (1933-1983), one of the most influential and iconoclastic figures in postwar Japanese ceramics. Taro began working seriously in pottery in 1983, following his father's death, eventually taking over as the second generation of the Kamoda kiln. Working primarily by hand-building rather than on the wheel, and using glazes of his own devising applied with a brush, he has developed a personal style that echoes his father's spirit of formal freedom while remaining distinctly his own. He held his first solo exhibition at Aoyama Green Gallery in Tokyo in 1986, and has since shown his work at venues including Keio Department Store and the contemporary ceramics gallery Kanjitsuri at the Hotel New Otani.
