Obv: Archaic female head left, wearing earring and helmet or close fitting cap.

Phokaia was a prominent Ionian maritime and commercial city on the Aegean coast. Its sailors established colonies including Massalia, Emporion, and Alalia, extending trade across the Mediterranean. Among the earliest issuers of electrum coinage, it influenced Greek monetary practice. In the 6th century BC, many inhabitants abandoned the city rather than submit to Persian rule, spreading Phokaian influence across the western Mediterranean.
