Alexander Calder was an American engineer and sculptor who moved to the vibrant Paris of the 1920s and began creating animal figures out of wood and wire. Little by little, he simplified them until they became abstract, and he discovered that they gained dynamism when they actually moved. This gave rise to his innovative mobiles (hanging, moving toys), which would eventually become the seed of kinetic sculpture.

Calder began with relatively small sculptures, but over the years these grew into monumental works that came to adorn the streets and squares of major cities around the world. His mobiles (so named by Marcel Duchamp) were complex structures of abstract organic forms, usually suspended in the air, that swayed gently and harmoniously. The almost imperceptible rotational movement causes the pieces of these sculptures to constantly change shape, creating infinite sculptures from a single one.

He was also interested in the shadows cast by his mobiles—as ever-changing as the pieces themselves—which led him to pay close attention to the lighting in exhibition spaces. Furthermore, sound was another interesting and innovative factor that he incorporated into his works, as these structures would collide with one another.
