賣家描述
Mambila Sculpture - Gembu Region, Nigeria
The standing wooden figure derives its powerful effect from a deliberately condensed, dynamic anatomy. A slender torso rises above strong, bent legs, with arms held at right angles; the hands meet in front of the projecting lower body. Metal pins and nails pierce the abdomen and midsection, suggesting possible ritual activation. The disproportionately large head is particularly striking: round, inset, or darkly painted eyes, a short nose, and a wide-open mouth give the face an alert, almost visionary expression. Notches in the hair and the earthy, partially encrusted patina reinforce the impression of intensive use.
The Mambila people live on both sides of the present-day border between Nigeria and Cameroon; Gembu is located on the Mambilla Plateau in Nigeria's Taraba State. Anthropomorphic figures are often referred to as tadep. Older interpretations understood them primarily as ancestral figures; more recent research, however, emphasizes their connection to the Suaga community and to practices of healing, protection, and ritual control. The figures were kept in or attached to special storage or shrine buildings.
