Château Phélan Ségur 1960 - SAINT ESTEPHE
The history of the Castle dates back to the early 19th century when Bernard O'Phelan, an Irish merchant based in Bordeaux, acquired two domains: the Clos de Gamarey (acquired in 1805) and the estate of Ségur de Cabanac (acquired in 1810) which will give the Château Phélan Ségur. In 1985, Xavier Gardinier bought it from the Delon family and managed the property with his three sons Thierry, Stéphane and Laurent. Finally, since 2018, Philippe Van de Vyvere and his son Pierre have been the owners.
The vineyard of Château Phélan Ségur extends over the eastern part of Saint-Estèphe and has 70 hectares of vineyards planted on a soil composed of gravel covered with clay sand and a limestone basement. 44 hectares of parks, forests and ponds complete the property and constitute a nice setting of biodiversity.
The castle pays particular attention to its farms, in search of maximum finesse and elegance. In addition to the great wine, he also produces two second wines, both in the Saint Estèphe appellation: Frank Phélan and Croix Bonis, which come from plots mainly planted in Cabernet-Sauvignon.
About the vintage
The 70 hectares of vineyards of Château Phélan Ségur have been producing great wines since the beginning of the 19th century. Viticulture on the estate is environmentally friendly, with a high planting density. The vines are on average 35 years old. The blend is composed of a large majority of cabernet sauvignon to which merlot is added, and depending on the year a touch of cabernet franc and petit verdot in recent vintages.
The harvest is manual and the winemaking respects the Bordeaux tradition with in particular a pre-fermentation maceration. This wine is aged in 50% new barrels for 18 months.
At the tasting, the wine of Château Phélan Ségur has a purple, ruby color and the mouth develops aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry associated with floral notes. On the palate, the wine is opulent and fleshy, it benefits from a good storage potential. Marry it to a royal hare or a small lentil salt for example.
