After an early period influenced by Modernism, Rodewald joined the Hamburg Secession in 1921 and evolved towards the approaches of New Objectivity and Magical Realism. In 1937, the National Socialist regime confiscated his works, classifying them as "Degenerate Art" (Entartete Kunst).
