Item Description
A boldly expressive flower vase in Mashiko-yaki (益子焼) stoneware by 村上東市 Murakami Toichi, a full member of the Japan Crafts Association (Nihon Kōgei Kai Seikai-in) and one of the leading studio potters working in the Mashiko tradition.

The form is a generous, rounded bottle shape — a broad, egg-like body tapering to a narrow cylindrical neck with a small, slightly flared mouth.
The entire surface is covered in a layered glaze treatment combining tetsu (iron) and dō (copper) colourants over a pale stoneware ground, creating an extraordinary surface of overlapping soft whites, warm lavenders, and rich dusty pinks and purples — a palette that evokes misty mornings or faded cherry blossoms.
The defining decorative feature is eight large circular mado-e (窓絵 — "window picture") roundels arranged across the body of the vase.
Each roundel is defined by an area of contrasting glaze treatment — some showing concentrated pools of iron-brown and copper-purple, others with gestural brushwork in dark iron against the pale ground — giving the impression of eight informal, abstract paintings floating across the surface.
Between and around the roundels, bold expressive brushmarks in iron and copper further animate the surface with a painterly, calligraphic energy.
The foot is unglazed, revealing the characteristic warm reddish-brown Mashiko clay.
The wooden presentation box (tomobako) is inscribed 益子焼窓絵丸紋鉄銅彩花生　東亦 with the artist's red seal.
Comes with original artist biography sheet and yellow cloth.

Artist Profile
村上東市 Murakami Toichi is a studio ceramicist based in 益子町 Mashiko-machi, Haga-gun, Tochigi Prefecture, working in the celebrated Mashiko ware tradition.
He graduated from Wakō University (Shōwa 50) and has been a full member (seikai-in) of the Japan Kōgei Association — the most prestigious body in Japanese traditional crafts.
