Vintage Japanese Kabazaiku Cherry Bark Low Table Wagon – Traditional Natural Bark Tea Cabinet & Planter Stand on Casters for Japandi Interior

Description
An extraordinary vintage Japanese low tea wagon and cabinet, fully encased in authentic Kabazaiku (traditional wild cherry bark woodwork from Akita Prefecture).

History & Craftsmanship:
Originating in the late 18th century (Edo Period) as a refined craft practiced by Samurai of the Kakunodate clan, Kabazaiku is a internationally unique art form officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan. Despite its name, it utilizes the outer bark of wild mountain cherry trees (Yamazakura). Master artisans apply the bark using heat-pressing techniques without damaging the living trees. Naturally rich in oils, cherry bark is exceptionally moisture-resistant, durable, and develops a deeper, lustrous amber patina over decades of use.

Craftsmanship & Material:
Masterfully crafted using natural Yamazakura (wild cherry tree) bark, this piece highlights the rich amber tones, natural sheen, and distinct horizontal lenticel patterns unique to traditional Kabazaiku handcraft. The polished lacquer surface accentuates the organic texture of the bark while protecting it from moisture.

Design & Contemporary Versatility:
Originally designed as a mobile tea wagon (Pot Wagon), it features a top surface with a 23 cm circular cutout (historically used for a tea urn or Hibachi brazier), a lower open shelf, a small storage drawer with ornate metal hardware, and subtle rolling casters underneath for effortless movement. In contemporary interior design, it serves as a versatile low coffee table, side table, or an extraordinary botanical planter stand (ideal for inserting a plant pot directly into the cutout).

Condition:
Exhibits authentic vintage character with light surface wear, minor edge scuffs, natural bark seam lines, and subtle marks consistent with age and natural materials. The rolling casters on the underside are intact and functional. Please carefully review all detailed close-up photographs to evaluate physical condition before bidding.

Period
Mid to Late 20th Century (Showa Period)
