The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the cloth seal of the city of Leiden from IL vd BC in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands.

The previous owner, IL vd BC from Zoetermeer, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s.

Background Information:
Lead cloth seals, known in Dutch as lakenloden, were official seals attached to textiles as part of the regulated production and inspection of cloth. They could certify aspects such as quality, dimensions, origin or compliance with local regulations. Impressed designs, civic emblems and inscriptions enabled merchants and buyers to recognise the authority responsible for inspecting the textile.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, Leiden developed into one of the leading textile-producing centres of the Dutch Republic and north-western Europe. Woollen cloth manufacture was fundamental to the city's economy, involving specialised craftsmen and workers at numerous stages, from preparing and weaving the wool to finishing, inspecting and marketing the completed fabric. Leiden textiles entered extensive commercial networks and were distributed well beyond the city itself.

Cloth seals therefore represent more than simple commercial labels: they formed part of an organised system of urban quality control that protected the reputation of Leiden's textile industry. Made from lead, they were attached directly to finished cloth and consequently accompanied the merchandise during trade. Once the textile was used, the seals were commonly removed and discarded.

Dating to the 16th–17th century, this example belongs to the period in which Leiden's textile industry played a major role in the city's economic development.
