賣家描述

一枚古埃及釉质护身符, depicting an ibis, an animal associated with the god Thoth. The bird is shown recumbent, with its legs folded beneath the body and incorporated into the amulet’s integral plinth. The elongated neck curves gracefully forward, terminating in a small head with a long, crescent-shaped beak. The bird’s curved neck and beak are supported by the Ma’at feather,. A small perforated suspension loop is preserved at the top.

Thoth, frequently represented in the form of an ibis, played an important role in the judgment of the dead. In Book of the Dead he records the result of the weighing of the deceased’s heart. Thoth is consequently often depicted in association with the goddess Ma'at, whose feather served as the counterweight against which the purity of the heart was measured. Amulets depicting the ibis were therefore intended to provide protection for the deceased, helping to ensure a favourable outcome before the court of the dead.

Dimensions: 2,3 cm wide x 1,5 cm high

Provenance: Dutch Private Collection, Ex Gorny & Mosch. Dr. Hans Halter, Swiss collection before 1966. In EU collection since 2006.
