Item Description
This is a bronze vase from Takaoka-dōki (高岡銅器), a nearly 400-year-old traditional metalworking craft from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, officially designated as a Japanese Traditional Craft.
The vase has a flattened, rounded body with two stylised bird-head handles, their open beaks projecting outward from the shoulders, and is finished in a rich verdigris (green patina) surface that gives it an aged, antique appearance.
The front is decorated with a dramatic phoenix (鳳凰) in high relief, its wings spread wide and tail feathers sweeping into flame-like forms, picked out in warm gilt highlighting that contrasts beautifully against the weathered green ground — the phoenix being a motif long associated in Japanese and East Asian art with rebirth, nobility, and good fortune.
The piece is signed "宏" (Hiroshi) on the front, identifying the work of its Takaoka bronze artisan, Murakami Hiroshi.
Dating from the 1980s, this vase carries real presence and weight, and makes a striking decorative accent — a fine example of the patination artistry for which Takaoka-dōki is especially renowned.
