A remarkable historic garnet-bearing granite erratic from the Grunewald Forest near Dahlem, Brandenburg, Germany.

The specimen contains numerous dark red to brownish garnet crystals embedded directly in a coarse-grained granitic matrix, creating an attractive contrast between the garnets and the light-coloured feldspar and quartz-rich host rock. Several garnet crystals are clearly visible on the exposed surface, with some showing distinct crystal faces and a strong vitreous to resinous lustre.

Particularly noteworthy is the original handwritten historical label, identifying the specimen as “Granaten in Granit-Geschiebe” and giving the locality as Grunewaldforst bei Dahlem, Pr. Brandenburg. The historical designation Pr. Brandenburg refers to the former Prussian Province of Brandenburg; the locality of Dahlem is today part of Berlin, Germany.

This is an interesting specimen not only for its mineralogical character, but also for its historical provenance and original old label, making it especially appealing to collectors of garnet, European localities, historical mineral specimens and old mineralogical material.
