antique French silver sugar serving scoop by Eugène Roussel-Doutre, Paris, dating from the mid-19th century.

The scoop is crafted in solid 800 silver and bears the French Minerva head hallmark for second-standard silver, together with the maker’s mark “ROUSSEL” struck in a horizontal lozenge.

The maker’s mark can be attributed to Eugène Roussel-Doutre, founder of the renowned Parisian Roussel-Doutre silversmith dynasty. Eugène registered his maker’s mark in Paris in 1849, and it remained in use until 1865.

A Belgian control or import hallmark is also present. This Belgian mark was used during the period 1831–1868, indicating that the scoop was imported into and officially controlled in Belgium during the mid-19th century.

The large bowl is modelled in the form of a deeply fluted scallop shell. It is richly decorated with embossed floral ornamentation, scrolls and rocaille motifs. The long handle features finely engraved diaper-pattern panels, flowers and scrolling foliage, characteristic of the French Louis XV Revival or Rococo Revival style.

The piece was most likely intended as a sugar serving scoop, used for serving granulated or crystallised sugar during formal tea and coffee service.

Condition
