Chewa artistic production is extremely varied, imaginative, and often infused with satire or humor:

* Anthropomorphic Masks: They depict human faces (elders, ancestors, spirits) often painted in vivid colors like red, blue, or green, and embellished with real hair, beads, or fabrics.

During Gule Wamkulu performances, it is believed that the masked dancers temporarily lose their human identity to become the embodiment of the spirits of the dead (mizimu) or specific animal and moral entities. The dynamic, rhythmic movements serve to impart ethical teachings and maintain social order within the Chewa community.
