Vintage Japanese Hand-Carved Wooden Tengu Mask – Crow-Billed Demon Wall Sculpture with Gold Eyes & Negoro-Style Lacquer Finish for Japandi Display
Description
An expressive vintage hand-carved wooden Japanese ritual mask (Omen), portraying a Karasu Tengu—the legendary bird-like mountain spirit from Japanese folklore.
Iconography & Artisanal Craftsmanship:
Crow-Billed Design: Dynamically carved from solid timber with a sharp raven-like beak, intense gold-painted eyes, deep facial furrows, and a small hexagonal ceremonial cap (Tokkin) carved on top of the head.
Negoro-Style Lacquer Finish: Coated in a rich red-and-black distressed lacquer finish reminiscent of traditional Negoro lacquerware, accentuating the dramatic facial contours.
Contemporary Interior Display:
With its commanding theatrical presence and rich color palette, this piece serves as an extraordinary focal sculpture for Japandi entryways, eclectic gallery walls, or Asian art collections.
Condition:
Exhibits genuine vintage character with age-related timber features:
Cracks: Features an age crack on the top ceremonial cap (Tokkin) and a small hairline drying crack along the side rim.
Includes natural finish rubbing and minor scuffs consistent with solid aged wood.
Structurally sound and equipped with wire for wall display. Please inspect all detailed close-up photographs prior to bidding.
