About This Piece

Deep green tones bring the raised floral and botanical reliefs to life across the rounded body, while large scrolling handles extend to either side, giving this 25 cm tall, 2,025 g bronze vase a strong and distinctive presence.

Design and Decoration

The vase has a full, rounded Daruma-shaped (だるま型) body, encircled by relief decoration.

At the center, a large botanical motif spreads outward to both sides. As the decoration continues around the body, large blooming flowers appear across the sides, creating a continuous composition around the rounded form.

The neck is decorated with trailing vines, while the base features taotie motifs (饕餮文).

On either side, decorative handles reminiscent of curling plant vines form large scrolling shapes. From broad botanical motifs to smaller scrolls and repeating patterns, decorations of varying forms and sizes extend across the body, neck, base, and handles.

Color and Surface

The surface is finished in a deep green tone reminiscent of ancient bronze vessels.

Rather than being simply painted onto a flat surface, the patterns are formed in relief. Their raised and recessed details stand out clearly within the varying shades of deep green, highlighting the flowers, plants, and scrolling lines.

Origin and Provenance

This is a Takaoka Bronze Ware (高岡銅器) bronze vase.

It dates from the Shōwa period (昭和時代) and comes from a private collector’s collection.

Condition

Overall, the vase is in good condition.
