A French bronze tazza (footed compote) by the Paris Salon sculptor Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915), signed "E. Picault." The shallow circular bowl rests on a spreading pedestal foot chased with an engraved laurel/olive wreath band, and is flanked by two scrolled (volute) handles. Set into the centre of the bowl is a raised circular medallion cast in relief with a pastoral scene: a standing shepherdess with staff, tending a small flock of sheep, titled "RACHEL" in the cast beneath the figures.

Picault exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and is known for a series of twin-handled bronze tazzas of this type, each centred on a titled narrative or allegorical relief; comparable examples in the series depict subjects such as a scene from Macbeth and the story of Herodias. This tazza is a good, mid-size example of the series at 26.5 cm across.

Good overall condition for its age, with an untouched, naturally tarnished bronze patina consistent with a piece of this age that has not been recently polished.

The bowl and foot are joined by a threaded rod through the underside centre, consistent with normal two-piece period construction for this type of cast tazza. The underside also carries a small hand-scratched "H.P" foundry mark beside the threaded fitting .
